Leeds United secured a big move on Friday afternoon, appointing top target Marcelo Bielsa as their new manager to replace Paul Heckingbottom.

Owner Andrea Radrizzani sacked Heckingbottom earlier this month and looked to bring in a big-name replacement, having seen the 40-year-old win just four times in 16 games following a move from Barnsley in February.

Bielsa, 62, arrives as one of the biggest appointments in Championship history, with the Argentinian legend earning a reputation over the years as one of the great tactical innovators.

Matej Vydra of Derby celebrates during the Sky Bet Championship match between Derby County and Nottingham Forest at iPro Stadium on October 15, 2017 in Derby, England.

The former Lille boss will now be charged with the task of improving a Leeds side which finished in the bottom half of the Championship table once again, with The Mirror claiming he has a £20million budget at his disposal.

Bielsa must bring in attacking reinforcements, but the Yorkshire Evening Post claimed last week that Leeds will only bring in one of Abel Hernandez or Matej Vydra, as the funds aren’t quite there for both players.

Hernandez endured injury problems last season but did score five goals in seven games to end the campaign, and the 27-year-old is particularly appealing given that he’s available for free with his Hull City contract expiring.

Abel Hernandez of Hull City celebrates scoring during the Sky Bet Championship match between Hull City and Queens Park Rangers at KCOM Stadium on April 7, 2018 in Hull, England.

Meanwhile, Derby forward Vydra hit 21 goals this past season but the Rams want around £10million for his signature, and he isn’t a natural centre forward, more of a creative, deep-lying striker.

Now, Leeds fans have been debating the dilemma in front of Bielsa, and the mixed response shows the tough decision ahead, with many feeling that Leeds need a proven centre forward like Hernandez over a creative player in Vydra, especially on a free transfer – though some had concerns about Hernandez’s injury history and fitness to play in Bielsa’s system, preferring Vydra as a result, and it remains to be seen who Bielsa goes for.
