There is still time for Vurnon Anita to come good at Leeds United.
Vurnon Anita was given the nod at right-back yesterday and put in an assured performance in Leeds United’s 2-2 draw with Bristol City.
Anita has been under used since signing on the summer, with Leeds snapping him up on a free transfer from Newcastle United.
The former Dutch international’s versatility has often counted against him and until yesterday he had started only nine Championship games out of 31.
With current right-back Gaetano Berardi suspended, Anita got his chance yesterday despite pre-match speculation winger Stuart Dallas could be picked in the position.
Despite a shaky start for Leeds, Anita did not let the team down and was not culpable for either of Bristol City’s soft goals which came from set piece mistakes.
This was the first time Anita had played all 90 minutes in a league game since September and his fitness held up.
He created one chance from a cross and looked assured in possession while defensively he made four clearances.
Anita was not one of former manager Thomas Christiansen’s favourites but he has started off well under Paul Heckingbottom in the new Leeds boss’ first home fixture.
Gaetano Berardi may not go straight back into the team when he returns as Anita did nothing to suggest he deserves to be dropped.
