A select round-up of transfer news relating to Manchester United, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Eliaquim Mangala and Luke Simpson.

Reports from Spain suggest that Cristiano Ronaldo will remain at Real Madrid, despite speculation linking him with a summer return to Old Trafford. Following stories that the player had rejected a contract extension last week, and with only two years left on his current deal, it was suggested in some quarters that United were readying an offer of £65million.

However, the Portuguese forward has spoken out about his future while on international duty.

I haven’t spoken to anyone yet,” he said. “I know we’ll reach an agreement on a new contract.”

And yet that hasn’t stopped English reports this morning suggesting a deal to bring him back to Manchester remains possible.

It is being suggested that United wish to sign Ronaldo by August 8, so the player can be unveiled at Old Trafford prior to Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial.

Expect this story to run for some time yet.

Another player United may miss out on is Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala. Reports back in March suggested the Premier League champions were targeting the Frenchman, who has just finished an outstanding season in Portugal.

Commenting on those stories Mangala said, “To be linked with clubs of the stature of Manchester United is the best feeling. I want to finish the season strongly and see at the end of the season if the reports are true.”

Whether or not they are, it is now being said that Chelsea are in the box-seat for the player.

Stories this morning cite the fact that David Moyes is on holiday as the reason United may lose out on the centre-back. Although that didn’t stop the club completing a deal for Guillermo Varela on Friday.

One player who may be on his way to Old Trafford is Oldham goalkeeper Luke Simpson. United and Celtic are said to be interested in the 18-year-old, who is yet to make a first-team appearance although he has excelled for the youth team.
