Tottenham Hotspur lost ground on teams above them as they could only record a 1-1 draw away at Southampton on Sunday afternoon.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men were on a high after beating Everton 4-0 at Wembley Stadium last weekend, and the Argentinian was looking for another good result as he visited former club Southampton.
However, his side got off to a dreadful start, with Davinson Sanchez putting through his own net from Ryan Bertrand’s left wing cross, handing Southampton a 1-0 lead.
Harry Kane did quickly equalise to make it 1-1, and that’s how it stayed as Tottenham pressed for a winner but couldn’t find the all-important touch in front of goal.
The result leaves Spurs two points off the top four before Liverpool’s clash with Swansea, and was particularly frustrating given that Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all won over the weekend.
After the final whistle, goalkeeper Michel Vorm – handed a rare start due to Hugo Lloris’ absence – took to Twitter to admit he was disappointed with the result, but was pleased to make his 100th appearance in the Premier League.
Fellow shot-stopper Paulo Gazzaniga, who was named on the bench, also took to Twitter to reflect on his first return to Southampton since his summer move to Spurs, posting a photo alongside former teammate Oriol Romeu.
