Sunderland goalkeeper made his comeback in the Checkatrade Trophy last night.
Vito Mannone made his comeback from injury in the much maligned Checkatrade Trophy competition last night.
He featured for the Black Cats’ under-23 team in the 2-1 victory over Notts County, with midfielder Sebastian Larsson also featuring, and scoring a last minute winner.
Sunderland’s Vito Mannone celebrates
Mannone picked up an elbow injury back in August, which The BBC reported could sideline him for three months.
Last night was his first game since, and he came through it unscathed, although could not quite keep a clean sheet.
After the game, Mannone commented on social media to express his delight at being back in action and contributing to a win.
Mannone’s absence has seen youngster Jordan Pickford step up, and establish himself in the first team.
While there is no immediate rush to make a judgement, Mannone’s return will hand manager David Moyes an important selection decision to make.
Mannone, 28, has more experience, which could be vital for Sunderland in a relegation scrap, but with the team recording their first league win at the weekend, Moyes could decide to extend Pickford’s run.
