Sunderland’s Vito Mannone celebrates
Sunderland are currently facing something of a goalkeeping shortage.
The Black Cats failed to bring in adequate cover for Italian stopper Vito Mannone, who has suffered torn elbow ligaments.
Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford looks dejected
But the goalie did have some positive news on Twitter yesterday.
It might have gone missed by many with transfer deadline day going on around them but Mannone posted this update on his condition:
It appears that there are no complications at present and Mannone should be making a swift recovery.
His injury has left Sunderland with just young pair Jordan Pickford and Max Stryjek in the first-team picture.
Both are talented stoppers, but a player with more experience would certainly have been wanted by David Moyes for the time being.
Sunderland’s Vito Mannone warms up before the game
The club just missed out on a deal to bring Boavista goalkeeper Mika to the Stadium of Light, as they ran out of time as the deadline raced toward its close at 11pm last night.
Sunderland fans will be hoping that Pickford can perform to the level he is undoubtedly capable of whilst the Italian is on the sidelines.
