Celtic moved one step closer to the Scottish Premiership title by drawing 1-1 at home with Rangers this afternoon.

The Bhoys went into today’s game having dropped just two points over the course of their league campaign, and they were hoping to keep their unbeaten season going against bitter rivals Rangers.

Brendan Rodgers’ men went in front in the first half as Stuart Armstrong smashed a left-footed strike into the bottom corner of the net, giving Wes Foderingham little chance.

Rangers – who were watched from the stands by new manager Pedro Caixinha – didn’t lie down though, and claimed a deserved equaliser when Clint Hill converted from close range after Craig Gordon had parried Emerson Hyndman’s strike.

Rangers did have a late scare as Hill appeared to bring down Celtic attacker Leigh Griffiths inside the penalty area, but referee Bobby Madden was unmoved and waved away the penalty appeals.

The 1-1 draw means Celtic have moved a step closer to winning the title with a historic unbeaten season, and whilst fans will have wanted bragging rights over Rangers, the Bhoys are now edging towards a sixth league title in a row.

Celtic are ultimately targeting ten league titles in a row, and a player who helped them win two titles has offered his reaction on Twitter, with Virgil van Dijk sending a message to fans after the final whistle.

The Dutch centre back looked ahead to ten titles in a row, seemingly suggesting that today’s result sealed the title – and showed that the injured Saints skipper still takes a keen interest in his former club.
