Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk has told Sky Sports that people still underestimate the size of Celtic.

Van Dijk was on the books of Celtic from 2013 until 2015 before he moved to Southampton in the Premier League.

The Netherlands international central defender earned the move to Liverpool in January 2018 and is now considered as one of the best players in his position in the world.

The 28-year-old has spoken highly of his time at Celtic, and believes that people still underestimate how big the Hoops are.

Van Dijk told Sky Sports: “Celtic is a massive club – people still underestimate how big it is – with European football and I spent two fantastic seasons there.

“I learned a lot about football and life. The European nights were outstanding, I learned a lot about how to deal with certain strikers.

“Then there’s the Scottish Premiership. It isn’t the hardest in the world but it’s a league where everyone expects you to win and that was something new for me to deal with because Willem II and Groningen were never teams people expected to win.”

Successful season

Both Liverpool and Celtic are having successful seasons – or will have successful seasons if and when the campaigns in England and in Scotland get back underway.

The Reds are at the top of the Premier League table at the moment, 25 points clear of second-placed and defending champions Manchester City, who have played 28 matches.

As for Celtic, the Hoops are 13 points clear of second-placed and bitter Old Firm rivals Rangers at the top of the standings, although Steven Gerrard’s side have a game in hand.
