Sadio Mane scored both the goals for the Reds, but Van Dijk believes that it was Brazil international defensive midfielder Fabinho who was the man of the match.
A defensive midfielder by trade, the 26-year-old was deployed in defence, and he produced a brilliant display at the back and coped well with Timo Werner.
According to WhoScored, the Brazilian had a pass accuracy of 96.7%, took 102 touches, and made four tackles and four interceptions.
Metro quotes van Dijk as saying about Fabinho’s performance: “Outstanding. I just told him as well I think he was man of the match today.
“To keep a striker like Werner, don’t let him score, a bit unlucky with the penalty incident, but overall he was outstanding. Everyone knows how good he is.”
Another centre-back option
Fabinho is a brilliant defensive midfielder, and his performance at centre-back against Chelsea shows that he is a brilliant option in defence as well.
Joel Matip and Joe Gomez both were ruled out against Chelsea, and it really did not seem that Liverpool were playing with a defensive midfielder in defence.
