Virgil Van Dijk offers clarification on his comments on his Liverpool future

Virgil Van Dijk has insisted that he remains committed to Liverpool despite the comments from the Dutchman a few days ago.

With the shocking news that Jurgen Klopp will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, Virgil Van Dijk is one of a few players who have 18 months left to run on his current contract at Anfield.

The Dutch defender has rediscovered his best form for the Reds after a tough season for everyone involved saw the Anfield club miss out on Champions League football last season.

With Klopp’s future away from Anfield, however, the Dutch defender may well be considering his future at the club and may want assurances over the club’s direction.

Van Dijk hits out

The Dutchman spoke to Sky Sports News and reaffirmed his commitment to Liverpool and insisted his comments, which surfaced last week claiming that he ‘didn’t know’ what the future held for him, were taken out of context.

Van Dijk has reaffirmed his commitment to Liverpool. “It is much taken out of context,” Van Dijk said.

“To be 100 per cent clear, I am fully committed to the club. I love the club, I love the fans. It is fully taken out of context.

“It is not about me, it is not about I, it is about us, nothing has changed. Five days ago we weren’t even speaking about my contract, so it’s a bit silly. My full focus is on making sure this year is a very special year.”

It is unclear who will take over from Klopp in the summer but HITC reported last week that Xabi Alonso was firmly in the frame for the role in the summer.

Van DIjk’s future

There is no question that the Liverpool captain remains a superb defender and has recovered well from the ligament problem that he suffered during the 2020-2021 COVID season.

However, at 32 years of age, the defender has achieved all he can in England and at Liverpool and you wonder if a move in the summer, dependent on what the new manager’s plans are for the former Southampton defender.

You suspect that won’t be the last time we hear about Van Dijk”s future.
