Virgil van Dijk hasn’t played for Southampton since January.
Virgil van Dijk could cost in excess of £50 million
Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has reveled that he is making progress on his road to recovery.
The Dutchman – who has been out of action since suffering an ankle injury in January’s 3-0 win over Leicester – posted footage of himself running on an anti-gravity treadmill on Instagram.
“Stepping it up” – his caption for the video – suggests that it’s a step forward in his recovery but the fact he’s using the machine suggests a return to playing is still some way off.
With only eight weeks of the season remaining, it remains very possible that van Dijk won’t play again this campaign.
That means he might have played his last game for Southampton, with The Telegraph saying this week that Chelsea are in pole position to sign him in the summer.
Manchester City have also been heavily linked to the 25-year-old, who was given a City shirt in the club’s secret Santa exercise before Christmas.
In his absence the Southampton defence, which has comprised of Maya Yoshida and youngster Jack Stephens at centre-back, has been considerably less convincing and conceded 18 goals in eight matches.
