Vinnie Jones has hit back at the Leeds United supporters who gave him ‘stick’ for congratulating Sheffield United on their promotion to the Premier League.

Over the weekend, Chris Wilder’s side beat Ipswich Town 2-0, whilst their nearest rivals Leeds recorded a 1-1 draw at home to Aston Villa, which confirmed the Blades’ promotion.

Former Wimbledon hitman Jones posted this message on his personal Twitter account, but speaking to the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show on TalkSport (29/04/2019 at 6:45 am), he was baffled by the criticism he received from some quarters of the Elland Road faithful for that tweet.

“A couple of people give me stick on Twitter, a couple of Leeds fans, but I don’t think they realise I played for Sheffield United,” Jones told TalkSport. “We had a right battle one year. Bottom of the league and got up. Played with Chris Wilder and you do the right thing like the Leeds manager has done.

“I took a bit of stick on Twitter saying ‘Well done Sheffield United’ and ‘Well done Chris Wilder’. I know him personally. I just wonder where fans are coming from sometimes? Hopefully, we’ll go up and we’ll end up at Wembley.”

Since the turn of the year, Leeds and Sheffield United have been battling for that second spot whilst current leaders Norwich City put a gap between themselves and the Yorkshire duo.

At one point, it seemed as though Marcelo Bielsa’s side had done enough to secure automatic promotion. But, they suffered back-to-back defeats over the Easter period to all but end those hopes.

Now, the Whites will focus on joining Sheffield United in the Premier League by winning the playoffs. At this moment in time, they will take on Derby County in the playoff semi-finals, with Aston Villa and West Brom locking horns in the other encounter.
