Vinnie Jones has told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT [17/12/2018] that he is cautiously optimistic about former club Leeds United.
The Whites are top of the Championship after beating Bolton 1-0 on Saturday for a fifth successive victory for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Leeds, who also boast a six-point cushion in the automatic promotion spots, look every inch the stellar team that fans hoped they would become when it was announced that the veteran Argentine coach was taking the reins last summer.
That being said, there will be a number of United fans who are concerned about getting too excited, given the way in which Leeds teams of recent years have capitulated.
And although Jones is excited by his old side, he isn’t ‘jumping the gun’.
He told talkSPORT: “Top, top, top of the league. Marching on Together. I love it. I don’t want to jump the gun and say ‘this is the year’.
“I’d just like them to go out every week and get a great result. It’s going to be a battle with Norwich but they’re getting the distance far enough from third or fourth place.”
Jones is right in the sense that getting carried away too early is a dangerous game and one that ultimately has led to heartbreak in recent seasons for Leeds fans.
But this season is different. Garry Monk’s team of 2016-17 were never going to win automatic promotion and they never looked like it, while the same could be said for the Elland Road side during Thomas Christiansen’s spell, despite a rip-roaring first two months of last season.
Pessimism is understandable, given the recent history, but results indicate that it’s different this time – very different.
