It is often easy to suggest club managers dread international breaks, for a variety of reasons. Players could leave the club in a period of good form, jeopardising the momentum a coach has worked so hard to cultivate, or even worse, they could see a number of the squad walk back into the dressing rooms with knocks, bumps and breaks that have an even bigger impact on the season.

But it can also give certain players the chance to head back into an environment where they see more football, and can top up their confidence with a superb performance.

And this is very much what has happened with Tottenham Hotspur’s Netherlands striker Vincent Janssen, who scored in a 4-1 win over Belarus on Friday night. The below pictures illustrate just what that goal – his first in open play for club or country since last season – meant to him.

The 22-year-old, a new arrival at White Hart Lane, has been slowly adjusting to English football after an emphatic end to his final season at AZ. Though the Dutchman’s performances have been decent, the only goal to his name is a penalty in a 5-0 League Cup demolition of Gillingham.

With the pressure for a striker often quick to increase if goals don’t come freely, Janssen, and his club boss Mauricio Pochettino will have been delighted with his sensational strike against Belarus.

The forward gobbled up the ball in the middle of the pitch, and then embarked on a run that took him to the edge of the box, where he smashed a stunning strike into the far top corner.

Janssen’s emphatic celebrations made it clear how important the goal was, and Tottenham can look forward to seeing him return to Hotspur Way with a spring in his step.

Pochettino will likely tell the attacker to go out onto the pitch in the club’s next league game against West Brom, and show the same confidence and quality he exhibited in the famous orange of his country.

And that advice, on the back of this goal, could get Janssen’s season up and running in earnest.
