When Tottenham Hotspur signed Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar in the summer, Spurs fans were excited to finally see another striker arrive to hopefully ease the pressure on Harry Kane.

The fact that Janssen arrived as the Eredivisie’s top scorer last season was also music to their ears, even if not every Dutch import has proved to be a success in the Premier League.

Early evidence suggested that Janssen was right for the English top flight, strong, willing and a potentially great foil for Kane; however, just one goal in his first 12 matches for Tottenham – and that coming from the penalty spot – is not what he or his new fans were hoping for.

However, before Tottenham supporters get too worried about Janssen’s poor return, it is worth noting that last season he did not score a league goal until the eighth match of the campaign.

That is something Janssen himself alluded to recently, but what has not been mentioned is how he shone brightest in the second half of the campaign.

In fact, in his one and only season at Alkmaar Janssen scored just six goals in the first half of the Eredivisie campaign and a remarkable 21 in the second half. That equates to 1.2 goals per game in the final 17 matches – a superb return by practically anyone’s standards.

Given that Janssen was always going to take time to settle in North London, this is a big reason for Tottenham fans to keep the faith.

Janssen is the real deal; he just needs time to prove it.
