Cleverley, who is currently on loan at Aston Villa, had to take on the Blues with his new club this weekend and witnessed first-hand the quality that Chelsea possess this season.
The London side ran out 3-0 winners against Villa with an impressive display and Cleverley admits that Jose Mourinho’s side are likely to be one of the best teams across the continent this season.
“You come to Stamford Bridge and expect a difficult afternoon,” he said to Villa’s official site.
“They are a very good side at home. They will be one of the top sides in Europe this year. So we knew what to expect.”
Chelsea are already looking good to live up to their billing as title favourites with the bookies this season.
The Blues have elevated themselves to the table of the table already and have been unrelenting in their performances.
Mourinho’s men are unbeaten over the opening course of the campaign and have rarely looked like losing, after assembling a commanding back-four and matching it with a destructive strike-force.
As a result, Villa’s loss at the weekend, as Cleverley said, was not to be unexpected and nor should it dent their confidence.
The Midlands outfit have started the season well, despite two defeats in a row recently, and they must ensure that a loss at Stamford Bridge does not damage morale too much.
Villa have defied the odds so far this campaign, climbing into the top-half of the table after being tipped for relegation before it kicked off and they will be hoping to continue to prove people wrong as the season progresses.
