Darren Bent has stated on Twitter that Aston Villa fans ‘must be happy’ with their club’s decision to sign Ollie Watkins today from Brentford.
It’s a stunning move from Villa and a club-record because they have paid £28 million for his services, according to BBC Sport.
Villa announced on their own Twitter page that Watkins had put pen-to-paper on a five-year deal and he becomes the club’s second signing of the summer.
Dean Smith has already dipped into the Championship market when he snapped up right-back Matty Cash from Nottingham Forest, and now Watkins has arrived.
It’s a very good move from Villa because he walks straight into the starting XI, he is exactly what the club needs because of his ability to also play out wide and he has worked under Smith before.
Not only that, but Villa also begin their season with a League Cup encounter against Burton next Tuesday before their Premier League opener against Sheffield United.
It’s a great chance for Watkins to open his account and help lift a Villa side that survived relegation to the Championship on the last day of the Premier League season.
Watkins will now compete with the currently injured Wesley, Mbwanna Samatta and Keinan Davis for a starting spot, but given their previous performances, he’ll be backing himself to start straightaway.
