Villa ace: Delph doesn’t get enough praise for his ability to do this

Aston Villa midfielder Ashley Westwood has praised Fabian Delph’s pace in an interview today.

Ashley Westwood says that Fabian Delph does not receive enough plaudits for the pace that he possesses.

Westwood and Delph have made a solid partnership in the centre of Aston Villa’s midfield this season and he has complimented the former Leeds United man today.

Delph has been attracting admirers for his performances so far this season, even forcing his way into the England squad, but Westwood has picked out a rather unsung part of his game today.

“He’s frighteningly quick, people don’t realise that, he just glides past you. You don’t expect him to do it,” he said to the club’s official site.

“This season he’s taking his game to a new level and hopefully he can continue to get even better.”

Watching Delph develop into a player earning international recognition has left Westwood wanting to share some of his success.

Although it was not too long ago that Westwood was playing in the lower divisions, he is not one to rest on his laurels and he wants to push on now.

The 24-year-old says that he is aiming to join his Villa teammate in the England squad soon and hopes that if he keeps on his current run of form then he can make an impression on Roy Hodgson.

“Fabian has got his England call-up and Tom [Cleverley] is an international who I think will be back in there soon.

“I’m hoping to be in there soon, too. When I spoke to Fabian about England, he said he loved it.

“I’m made up for him because nobody deserves it more.”

Westwood’s improvements this season could be down to the fact that he has had added competition for first-team places.

The signing of Carlos Sanchez over the summer seems to have led to Westwood raising his game and the former Crewe man admits that the Colombian’s arrival has been a boost for him.

“It has kept me on my toes,” he explained.

“Carlos came in on the back of a great World Cup and it was up to me to up my game and show the gaffer I should be playing.

“I’ve just done my best each game and that’s what I will continue to do. If Carlos gets in ahead of me, I will still be rooting for him in the side.

“We’ve got a great set of lads here now and I think there will be exciting times ahead.”
