Viktor Hovland got the better of Scottie Scheffler in a sudden-death playoff at the Travelers Championship to secure the eighth win of his PGA Tour career.

Hovland rolled in a challenging eight-foot putt on the 18th green before Scheffler missed from just five feet to hand the title to the Norwegian.

The 28-year-old from Oslo in Norway played some exceptional golf this week at TPC River Highlands, as did the man from Dallas, Texas.

However, both Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler stumbled during the final round of the Travelers on Sunday.

They both did just enough to finish one clear of Collin Morikawa though, and Hovland got the better of Scheffler in the end to win the Travelers on the first playoff hole.

The now eight-time PGA Tour winner will be full of confidence that he will be able to compete with Scheffler on a consistent basis.

The Norwegian will be flying high on confidence right now.

Yeah, it was amazing, he replied.

Obviously the home crowd was rooting for Scottie, he’s the best player in the world, we’re in the United States of America, that goes, that’s just kind of how it goes. But I thought it was super-exciting.

It kind of feels like Scheffler motivated Hovland to play even better this week at TPC River Highlands.

Now the 28-year-old will have the self-belief required to go toe-to-toe with Scheffler once again, week in, week out.

Viktor Hovland comments on the fans at the Travelers Championship

Hovland responded when asked what he made of the crowds at TPC River Highlands over the weekend.

The crowds were super respectful and it just really motivated me to play better, he admitted.

Obviously with some Norwegian jerseys out there it brought the vibes, and I think the American crowds thought it was cool as well.

I thought it made the event a lot more enjoyable, I think.

So, yeah, it was just a blast to play at a great golf tournament, a great golf course, in front of great fans. And, yeah, it was an absolute blast.
