Having brought in 33-year-old Jose Fonte from Southampton, are West Ham fans happy with their latest signing?
West Ham United supporters were understandably excited about what their club had in store for them this season, after a fantastic first campaign under Croatian manager, Slaven Bilic. Moving to the new and improved London Stadium, as well as being promised some big new signings by their ownership, things were looking up for fans of West Ham.
However, a dreadful start to the season has derailed these high hopes, and West Ham are now focusing on bringing back the feel good factor, as opposed to be pushing for a European place like many expected. The swagger and confident playing style which West Ham had become so popular for last season, appears to have disappeared, with the goals drying up and the defence becoming leaky.
Now in desperate need of a turn in form, the Hammers have moved to bring in Southampton defender and European Cup winner, Jose Fonte. An excellent defender over the years for the Saints, Jose Fonte is a clearly quality improvement, but at 33, is the Portuguese defender too old? HITC Sport asked West Ham fans just that…

“Good signing” was the reaction by most West Ham fans, who saw the arrival of Fonte as a big improvement to their back four. Many West Ham fans cited his performances at the Euros as one reason to be excited, as the defender helped lead Portugal to a victory. Other West Ham fans also suggested that putting him on a two-year deal was a masterstroke, as the Hammers can therefore just get the best few years out of him which he has left.
Some West Ham fans also mentioned their frustration at the fact that West Ham’s owners were happy to fork out money for Fonte, but not for Defoe, who is of a similar age. Would a short term deal for Defoe, similar to that of Fonte’s, not work out for the Hammers? Only time will tell how successful the defender’s move turns out to be.
