Udinese beat Fiorentina 2-1 in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final despite Juan Manuel Vargas’s stunning long-range goal.
Udinese took a step closer to reaching the Coppa Italia final with a hard-fought win over Fiorentina, but the goal of the evening came from the Viola’s Juan Manuel Vargas.
Vargas struck back with a blasted effort from well outside the box that seemed to come from nowhere and left the goalkeeper with no chance.
But substitute Luis Muriel was the hero for Udinese when the Colombian found the net from 20 yards with an impeccable finish.
Udinese have already beaten Inter and AC Milan in the competition and have looked at home in the Cup despite their disappointing league form.
The second leg will be held at Fiorentina’s Stadio Artemio Franchi on February 11 with the winners facing Roma or Napoli in the final.
