Trialist Alie Bangura did his chances of landing a contract at Sheffield Wednesday no harm, scoring in the Owls Under-18s’ 3-0 win against Leeds United on Saturday.
Bangura caught the eye during Broxbourne Borough’s surprise run to round five of this season’s FA Youth Cup, where they were beaten by Aston Villa.
And Wednesday have seemingly put themselves at the front of the queue of clubs chasing the 18-year-old’s signature, having invited him up from Hertfordshire this week.
As well as week’s training with the Owls, Bangura enjoyed a run-out in Saturday’s mini Yorkshire derby at Leeds’ Thorp Arch training ground, and was on target either side of goals for Joe Cook and George Hirst in a comprehensive win for Steve Haslam’s side.
Bangura is not the first non-league talent to have been invited for a trial at Wednesday this season, with former Hednesford Town left-back Cohen Bramall certainly the most notable.
The 20-year-old impressed for the Owls’ development side in last month’s win over Birmingham City, but later signed for Arsenal instead after being spotted by Gunners scout Brian McDermott.
