Tottenham Hotspur’s Anton Walkes had a debut to forget for Atlanta United.
On-loan Walkes was introduced nine minutes from time for the Georgia side, who were playing in their first ever competitive fixture, at home to New York Red Bulls.
However, barely a minute had passed when the 20-year-old diverted Kemar Lawrence’s cross into his own goal as Bradley Wright-Phillips homed in.
Atlanta, who are managed by former Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino and whose roster includes former Premier League players Chris McCann and Kenwyne Jones, had taken a first-half lead through Yamil Asad.
Despite creating numerous opportunities to double their lead, United were pegged back by Daniel Royer’s header in the 75th minute, before the Spurs loanee struck.
The winner followed an eye-catching move from the visitors, in which former Leeds United forward Mike Grella cleverly back-heeled into Lawrence’s path.
