Raphael Guerreiro was a surprise name to emerge as a Leeds United transfer target in the summer, but he has stayed at Dortmund – and on Wednesday night, he scored a stunning goal in a 4-1 Champions League win over Sevilla.

Guerreiro, 28, has become synonymous with Dortmund having joined the club Lorient back in 2016. Since that move, he has clocked up 198 appearances for the Bundesliga club – having a hand in 74 goals from left-back.

The Portugal international has netted 37 times, and laid on 37 assists. On Wednesday night, he opened the scoring in a 4-1 win over Sevilla. Controlling a gorgeous long ball from captain Jude Bellingham, he drove at the Sevilla defence.

Taking on a couple of players, he then unleashed a knuckleball-type shot into the far corner. A gorgeous goal, his third of the season – and his second in the Champions League. Despite his form, Dortmund are yet to tie him down.

Leeds fans were desperate for a left-back in the summer. Junior Firpo is yet to show why the club decided to sign him from Barcelona. In pre-season, Jesse Marsch tried Pascal Struijk, Jack Harrison and Leif Davis on the left of defence.

Struijk has since made that position his own. Naturally a centre-back, his form even saw Struijk win a place in the preliminary Netherlands squad during the last international break. But he is not a left-back.Leeds may still want one.

Dean Jones told Give Me Sport in the summer that Leeds were considering the Euro 2016 winner. He is out of contract at Dortmund next summer, and Leeds may decide to act on their initial interest. A pre-contract is available in January.

Judging by his form for Dortmund and his ability to score goals, such as his stunning effort from left-back on Wednesday, it would be a stunning signing for Leeds. Surely, though, Guerreiro sees Leeds as below him.
