Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Nabil Bentaleb netted his first goal for his country on Wednesday evening, opening the scoring in the World Cup warm-up match against Romania.

The 19-year-old started the season in Spurs’ under-21 side, but broke through under Tim Sherwood’s tenure and is now heading for Brazil having only made his debut for Algeria two months ago.

But just when Bentaleb thought it could not get any better, he scored the easiest of goals after a howler from Manchester City’s Costel Pantilimon.

A harmless cross looked easy pickings for the Romanian stopper, but he fumbled it, allowing the Tottenham starlet to bundle the ball home.

It remains to be seen how many chances Bentaleb will get in the short term now Sherwood has been replaced by Mauricio Pochettino. But if he carries on like this the former Southampton boss will have no option but to include him in his starting XI.
