It’s been a strange old season for Siem de Jong.

The Dutchman, signed by Newcastle United for £6 million this summer, was barely used to start with due to a lack of fitness. He watched on as the Magpies struggled for form and could only try and make a difference late on in the majority of matches.

But, when things started to go right for Newcastle, De Jong was ruled out with a long-term knee injury – and has been recovering ever since. During the club’s recent bout of poor form, meanwhile, De Jong, who turns 26 today, would have had to watch in agony.

He has been unable to change the club’s situation from the sidelines – but perhaps he can start to do so from this point onward.

Indeed, the Dutchman yesterday made his comeback from injury in a behind-closed-doors friendly for Newcastle. It wasn’t quite the Premier League but it was vital game time for De Jong nonetheless.

And, though it wasn’t pretty, the 26-year-old netted for the Magpies (video above). Can De Jong make a difference where it matters before the end of the season?
