Newcastle United fans have been giving their views and opinions on owner, Mike Ashley. Does he need to sell or stay?
Sitting second in the table, just one point off the top spot, Newcastle United have had an excellent season so far. Looking for an instant return to the Premier League under manager Rafa Benitez, the Magpies are battling it out with leaders Brighton for the top spot.
Having spent wisely in the summer, bringing in top players such as Matt Ritchie, Ciaran Clark, DeAndre Yedlin and Isaac Hayden, many Newcastle United fans have been happy with the club’s hierarchy this season. Managing to keep former Champions League winner Rafa Benitez at the club, was widely seen as a major coup for the Magpies, but have the club’s efforts in the summer changed Newcastle fan’s opinions on club owner, Mike Ashley.
A divisive character at St James Park, Ashley has never been far away from controversy with Newcastle United fans, but has this season in the Championship caused Magpies fans to think again? HITC Sport asked Newcastle fans for their thoughts…
Mike Ashley
Asked if he thought Mike Ashley was a changed man, one Newcastle United fan said “not really.” Another fan added “I hope he is starting to change, and put more money into the club.” Ashley hasn’t held back the pounds over the last few seasons however, backing Steve McClaren and Rafa Benitez in consecutive summer windows.
“He has put his money where his mouth is” added another Newcastle United fan, who was keen to defend the Magpies owner. “I didn’t realise he’d spent that much!” was the reaction from one Newcastle United fan, when told exactly how much the club spent during their last season in the Premier League.
“I think he’s learnt his lesson, he’s got a good manager in, he should’ve given him some money in January, but I think Rafa will get us up and if he gets some money in the summer, I think we’ll do OK next year.” responded one Newcastle United fan. So, has all been forgiven? It seems results speak louder than anything else.
