With Rob Elliot set to return from a nine-month injury lay-off, do Newcastle fans anticipate a return to the first-team for the Irishman?
With Newcastle finding themselves sitting comfortably at the top of the Championship, Magpies fans will be conscious of that age-old footballing proverb; ‘don’t rock the boat’. After a 4-0 drubbing of Birmingham City at the weekend, Newcastle United are seemingly in tip-top form, and one player who has really stood out for Benitez’s side in recent weeks is young goalkeeper, Karl Darlow.
Signed from Nottingham Forest several years ago, Darlow has found it difficult to get first team football at St James Park, serving either as an understudy to Tim Krul or Rob Elliot, or being shipped out away on loan. However, with Rob Elliot being injured, Darlow has had the chance the step up, and has grabbed it with both gloves.
With that in mind, we asked Newcastle United fans what they thought Rafa Benitez should do about this upcoming goalkeeping headache.
Newcastle United’s Karl Darlow
Opinion seems to be wavering towards Karl Darlow at the moment, due to his excellent recent performances (including the recent double penalty save). There also seems to be a shared opinion around St James Park that a change of team might affect the Magpies consistency. Other fans mentioned how impressed they were at how Darlow seems to “play for the shirt”, as opposed to Sels, who Newcastle fans seem to overwhelmingly not rate.
