Tall, unconventional and often a plan B, is Fellaini unfairly treated at Old Trafford, or is he simply just not good enough to play for Manchester United?
He’s a figure that has often divided opinion amongst Manchester United fans. Marouane Fellaini arrived at Old Trafford as the big signing during David Moyes’ tenure at Manchester United, leaving Everton for the Red Devils in 2013.
Tall, strong and great in the air, Fellaini has often been an important impact player for United, coming off the bench to score important last minute goals, or making vital tackles when being utilised as a central-defensive midfielder. However, his high profile errors, including penalty giveaways and late, late challenges, have often led to United fans branding Fellaini as “not a Manchester United player.”
But how do United fans really feel about the big Belgian? HITC Sport asked Manchester United supporters for their views and opinions…
Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini warms up
“He was on MUTV the other night and he’d just had a bath or a shower, and his hair was all slicked down, he looked quality. Why doesn’t he come out playing like that?” said one Manchester United fan, who seemed to think the biggest problem with the Belgian midfielder was his choice of hairstyle. The afro, which has become something of a trademark for Fellaini, has often split opinion amongst fans.
“When he comes on he makes a difference” added the United fan, who clearly rated Fellaini. This was not too unfamiliar a feeling around Old Trafford, with many suggesting the Belgian was an excellent impact player to have in the squad. But what player wants to be an impact substitute?
“I think he had a bad patch, and we didn’t like him” said one Manchester United fan, “mainly because he gave away two penalties, which didn’t help us but he’s playing better! Perhaps Mourinho’s found a different way for him to play.”
