Jermain Defoe scored twice in his first 45 minutes of MLS football – against a team containing Djimi Traore, Obafemi Martins and former Spurs team-mate Clint Dempsey.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker took just 16 minutes to get off the mark for new club FC Toronto against Seattle Sounders – who were much-fancied to win the clash during the build-up to the game.
But that did not appear enough for the 31-year-old, who went on to grab a second minutes later after a poor back-pass from a Seattle defender.
Rival fans are now worried that Defoe could do some real damage in the MLS, as Seattle isn’t exactly known as an easy place to go.
And perhaps England boss Roy Hodgson could do with a trip to the USA if the former Spurs man continues this type of form.
Rickie Lambert and Andy Carroll are widely believed to be in contention for the last striker’s spot in Hodgson’s Three Lions squad but, with two goals already for Toronto, Defoe could force himself back into World Cup reckoning.
The 31-year-old left White Hart Lane for Canada after five years at Tottenham, though that was only Defoe”s second spell in north London, with the striker also spending four years at the club before moving to Portsmouth for a season in between.
Interestingly enough, however, Dempsey became another former Spurs man to net in the MLS encounter, scoring after the break.
Could Defoe still have a chance of going to the World Cup with England?
