£3 million to sign an ageing defender and £5 million on his wages seemed a bizarre move by then Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini and it was a gamble that certainly didn’t pay off.
Maicon made just nine league appearances in City’s failed attempt to defend their title and was quickly moved on by Manuel Pellegrini when he replaced Mancini in the summer.
After moving to Italy on a free transfer, the 32-year-old has played 12 times in Roma’s unbeaten start to the season including today’s 2-1 victory at home to Fiorentina, which extended the run of games without defeat to 16 and put them back at the top of the table at the tim e of writing.
