Having left Derby County for Newcastle United in May 2015, how do the Rams feel about having their former boss back at the helm?
In his first spell with Derby County, Steve McClaren engineered a miraculous charge to the play-off final, after taking over the reigns from Nigel Clough. Changing Derby’s style of play to a fluid, attacking 4-3-3, McClaren transformed the Rams fortunes and arguably, in that first season in 2013/14, turned them into the feared, free-flowing Championship side they are today.
But after interest from Newcastle United, Steve McClaren’s head was turned, and after a poor end to the 14/15 Championship campaign, the former England manager lost his job, soon turning up at St James’ Park. Now, after a cycle of managers including Paul Clement (now at Swansea City), Darren Wassall and Nigel Pearson, the Mac has returned to Pride Park, and once again appears to be working his magic in turning the Rams around.
So how do Derby County fans feel about McClaren’s departure now? Is all forgiven? HITC Sport investigated.

“It was a very mixed reaction [from Derby fans]” said one Rams supporter, “but I was very, very happy with it.” Another Rams fan suggested that “it was one of those where we both had an 18 month break and realised that the grass wasn’t greener!” A fair suggestion from that Derby fan, who recognised clearly that the football after McClaren departed for Newcastle was never quite the same.
“I think he’s definitely passionate about the club” admitted another Rams fan, who seemed delighted at McClaren’s return. Other Rams fans were quick to point out that McClaren didn’t even leave by his own accord, he was in fact sacked by the club, after Chairman Mel Morris grew unhappy at the poor run of results.
It seems that despite the bitter end to his previous tenure, all has been forgiven at Pride Park and that above all else, results will do the talking.
