After signalling his intent to remain in the Premier League to prolong his international career, could Jermain Defoe trade Sunderland for Newcastle United?

It’s been a pretty miserable old season for Sunderland fans. After losing Sam Allardyce to the England job in the summer, the Black Cats were hoping former Manchester United manager David Moyes might be the main to turn their club’ss fortunes around. However, after struggling to recruit quality players and having one of the leakiest defences in the Premier League, Sunderland now look destined for the Championship.

One player who has been a highlight for Sunderland fans this season is Jermain Defoe. Their captain has continued to score goals despite the Black Cats struggling form, netting 14 goals this season, and managing to force his way back into the England set-up. But with Sunderland looking like going down, might Jermain Defoe be tempted by a move to a Premier League team to keep his international chances open? Even to a direct rival?

Among the fans that walked off in disgust at the very idea of Newcastle United signing Jermain Defoe, a few mustered up the strength to say a few words. “Jermain Defoe will not play for Newcastle” said one defiant fan, whereas another added “Jermain Defoe is not going to Newcastle, Sunderland fans won’t let it happen! We hate Newcastle!”

“I don’t think he will” added another fan, “he’s loved too much here for a start.” As depressing as a fact as it is, money does talk in football, but one fan added that, even if Mike Ashley does come along waving a big cheque in his face, that “he still won’t go.”

“If he went to Newcastle he’d become another Jack Colback and nobody would like him” added another fan. Is one more big money move risking your hero status at the Stadium of Light, Jermain?
