With relegation looming, HITC Sport has been chatting to Sunderland fans about the possibility of playing Championship football next season.
After a tough old season once again, Sunderland fans are bracing themselves for the possibility of a drop down to the Championship. Year after year, the Black Cats have been flirting with relegation, and with the club now stuck to the bottom of the table, Championship football is looking likely for next season.
But could the Black Cats survive in the Championship? Over the last year or so, the division has gotten harder and harder to get out of, with increased funding being found for several big clubs, not just those receiving parachute payments. More competitive than ever, Sunderland may well find it very difficult to get back in the Premier League, should they be relegated.
So how are Sunderland fans feeling about the possibility of playing in the Championship? HITC Sport asked Black Cats fans for their thoughts…

“It’s hard to say isn’t it because you don’t know who’s going to stay or who’s going to leave” said one Sunderland fan, who looked worried to say the least about the possibility of relegation. Other Sunderland fans weren’t too gloomy though, with one suggesting that they would come “straight back, maybe not as champions, but we’d come straight back up.”
“We’d be champions and come up next year” said another Sunderland fan, who was keeping in high spirits. Not all were convinced the Black Cats were going to be relegated though, with many still believing David Moyes’ men could pull off another great escape.
“If Sunderland get relegated, it could be the best thing that ever happened to them” added another Sunderland fan, who was remarkably cheery about the future. It’s clear that no matter what awful football they have to sit through, Sunderland fans manage to find a way to keep a smile on their faces!
