Alan Shearer played for Newcastle United for the final time in 2006.

On 17th April 2006, Alan Shearer played for Newcastle United for the final time, scoring a penalty as the Magpies beat Sunderland 4-1 at the Stadium of Light.

Shearer’s retirement was always imminent but an injury sustained in the game prematurely brought the curtain down on his sensational career, which saw the former England captain score 260 Premier League goals.

But what became of that Magpies side that started that day? Here, HITC Sport has taken a look…

GK: Shay Given

Shay Given would bring an end to his 12-year stay at Newcastle in 2009, joining Manchester City. He is now a free agent, following spells with Aston Villa and Stoke, as well as a loan spell at Middlesbrough.

RB: Stephen Carr

Stephen Carr would retire from the game in 2008, only to reverse his decision and join Birmingham in 2009. He captained the Blues to League Cup glory in 2011, retiring again in 2013.

CB: Titus Bramble

Titus Bramble left Newcastle in 2007, joining Wigan Athletic. He probably actually gained popularity amongst Magpies supporters by joining Sunderland in 2010, where his defensive frailties were often highlighted.

CB: Craig Moore

Craig Moore’s somewhat injury-plagued spell with Newcastle ended in 2007, with the defender returning to Australia with Brisbane Roar. He would finish his playing career with Greek side Kavala.

LB: Celestine Babayaro

The former Chelsea left-back left Newcastle in 2008. Though he joined LA Galaxy, he never played another game again following his departure from St James’ Park.

RM: Nolberto Solano

Nolberto Solano was one of the most exciting wingers in the Premier League during his first spell at Newcastle, and was enjoying his second spell with the club in Shearer’s final game. He subsequently played for West Ham, Leicester, Hull and Hartlepool while also enjoying spells in Peru and Greece.

CM: Amdy Faye

After an underwhelming spell with the Magpies, Amdy Faye played for the likes of Charlton, Rangers and Stoke before finishing his career in 2011 after a brief spell with Leeds.

CM: Lee Clark

Like Shearer, Lee Clark would finish his playing career in 2006. He has since established himself as a manager, working with Huddersfield, Birmingham, Blackpool, Kilmarnock and Bury, where he remains to this day.

LM: Charles N’Zogbia

Charles N’Zogbia left Newcastle in 2009 shortly after Joe Kinnear pronounced his name incorrectly on television. He would enjoy a good spell with Wigan, but his time at Aston Villa was incredibly disappointing with just four league goals coming in 80 games. He is currently unattached.

AM: Kieron Dyer

Kieron Dyer’s playing career would last for another six years after his Newcastle exit in 2007. However, injuries prevented him making much of an impact during his spells with West Ham, Ipswich, QPR and Middlesbrough.

ST: Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer’s slightly premature retirement did not end his association with Newcastle as he returned for a caretaker spell as manager in 2009. The spell would not go well, and he has not managed since, instead sticking to punditry. Despite that, he still rightfully remains a Newcastle legend.
