The 25-year-old says Celtic and Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers are well represented in his native Kenya.

Speaking to Four Four Two, Victor Wanyama has claimed that Celtic and Rangers both boast big fanbases in Kenya.

The Tottenham midfielder left Kenya in 2007 to join Swedish side Helsingborgs as a teenager, before eventually finding his way to Celtic in 2011.

The 25-year-old spent two years at Parkhead before enhancing his reputation with an excellent three years at Southampton in the Premier League, leading to his £15 million Spurs move in the summer.

Wanyama has come a long way, but he has reflected on his upbringing in Nairobi in an interview with Four Four Two, and claims Celtic and their Old Firm enemies Rangers are popular clubs in his homeland.

“In Kenya, there’s a big fanbase of both Celtic and Rangers,” said Wanyama.

“For a very long time they had charity set-ups in Kenya, and that built the support and the rivalry. I used to see people in Celtic and Rangers jerseys going to the pub to watch their games.”

Celtic and Rangers are clearly big clubs, and have been for a long time, but it might surprise both sets of supporters to know they are well represented in Africa.

The Hoops, of course, won the European Cup back in 1967, while the Gers won the Cup Winners Cup title in 1972 and finished runners-up in the UEFA Cup in 2008.

Rangers dominated the Scottish game between the late 80s and turn of the millennium, winning 12 Premiership titles in 14 seasons.
