The development has potentially thrown a spanner in the works for Mauricio Pochettino, with doubt surrounding how the Lilywhites will line up against Everton a week on Saturday.

Mousa Dembele still has a four-game ban to serve so the issue of who partners Dier in midfield until the Belgian returns is still up in the air.
Tomorrow’s friendly would have been an excellent opportunity to see how well a Dier/Wanyama combination could work in the heart of midfield but Pochettino will instead have to turn to other options.
