Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama has had his say on the North Londoners’ win over Manchester City before the international break, in an interview with Sky Sports, also going on to discuss the influence of manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Spurs comprehensively beat the league leaders at White Hart Lane at the start of the month, winning 2-0 and even having the room to miss a penalty in the second half. It was the first time City had failed to win in domestic football, and the first time anyone had stopped Pep Guardiola’s from scoring.
Wanyama gave a little insight into Tottenham’s match-winning tactics, telling Sky Sports: “Our aim was to press high and try to win the ball as high as we could.
“Everyone was ready for the challenge and we stepped up as a team and showed what we can do.”

Despite the result, the anchorman insists Spurs aren’t getting carried away, echoing recent comments by Pochettino ahead of the club’s next game against West Brom.
“It’s still early in the season, it was a big game but it doesn’t make us contenders because we won,” he said. “We just want to go to every game, get positive results and see from there.
“Our aim was to press high and try to win the ball as high as we could.”
The Kenyan international had his finest game for his new club in the crunch match between the Premier League’s two pacesetters. And crunch is a particularly apt word, as the 25-year-old helped Spurs dominate in midfield, making use of his power, strength and defensive commitment.

It is no surprise that Pochettino decided to return for Wanyama after the midfielder impressed after being signed by the Argentine at Southampton, and the player had encouraging words about the Spurs boss.
“He always wants to improve, he doesn’t want to stand still,” Wanyama said of his manager. “They did very well last season but we need to improve.
“They set the bar very high and the challenge is to improve.
“The manager knows me very well and what I can do, that is why he brought me here.”
