Victor Wanyama would have been ideal for West Ham United, if they could have got him in the summer.

The Daily Express claims that West Ham made a loan offer for Wanyama, but they were unable to get a deal over the line.

Tottenham Hotspur rejected the Hammers’ offer, and Manuel Pellegrini’s side opted not to bring in a defensive midfielder.

West Ham spent most their budget on improving their attack, and whether that proves to be an oversight remains to be seen.

West Ham only have Carlos Sanchez in reserve to cover for Declan Rice, if the England international does need a rest or gets injured.

Sanchez has so far looked shaky in a West Ham shirt, and Wanyama would unquestionably have been an upgrade.

Of course, there are question marks over Wanyama’s ability to stay fit, but on loan, he could have been a great option.

West Ham would have been under no obligation to buy the Kenyan, which means that if he did pick up an fitness problem, they would not have taken too much of a gamble.

If Wanyama did manage to stay off the treatment table he could have given them so much on the pitch too.

On his day, before injuries struck, Wanyama was one of the very best midfielders in the Premier League.

The combative midfielder has so much power and ability that he would really have put pressure on Rice, and that competition could have helped take the West Ham youngster’s game to the next level.

And everyone at the London Stadium must be wishing that they could have got a deal done for Wanyama now.
