Victor Wanyama looked to be on course for stardom at Tottenham Hotspur, but it all seemed to fade so quickly for him.

Mauricio Pochettino lured him to Spurs in the summer of 2016 having worked together with great results at Southampton.

Wanyama was outstanding in his first season with Tottenham. He bagged four goals in 36 league outings, forming a superb partnership with Eric Dier whilst dominating Premier League midfielders throughout.

The Kenyan’s high didn’t seem to last long. Niggling injuries reduced him to just 18 league games in the 2017-18 season, and his playing time just kept going down.

13 games in the 2018-19 season was followed up by just two league outings last term, and it was no great surprise when Spurs allowed him to leave for MLS side CF Montreal.

The 29-year-old is featuring regularly for the Canadian side, and has now opened up on his attempts to get out of Tottenham in March 2020.

Wanyama has told Radull Live back in Kenya that ‘life was tough’ under Mourinho, and he wouldn’t allow him to play due to injury fears.

Wanyama ended up going straight to Daniel Levy to engineer an exit, and he just couldn’t say no to a move to Montreal having grown unhappy at Tottenham.

“Life was tough under Mourinho. I was not playing. I was injured for some time and when I came back I could not get a chance,” said Wanyama. “I walked to the coach and told him I needed to play. He said ‘you have to wait, you are just coming back from injury’. Clubs came in for me and asked to take me on loan with an obligation to buy after some time but Tottenham said no.”

“I walked to the chairman’s (Daniel Levy) office and told him to understand my situation. I had been at the club for four years and we had celebrated milestones including the Champions League final. He granted me my wish. When Thierry Henry called me and asked me to join him at Montreal, I couldn’t say no,” he added.
