Everton need a new goalkeeper this summer, can Victor Valdes be a solution?
Middlesbrough’s Victor Valdes shakes hands with Stoke City players
Middlesbrough’s poor late season form has them currently positioned to make an instant return to the Championship.
Poor displays from their team means many of their squad will not be sought after by Premier League teams, but goalkeeper Victor Valdes is an exception.
The Spaniard is the most high profile player in Middlesbrough’s squad, as a three time Champions League winner with Barcelona.
Middlesbrough’s Victor Valdes saves a shot
At 35 the prospect of playing in the Championship is unlikely to appeal to him, but as a stop gap for Ronald Koeman’s Everton, he could be a useful solution to compete with fellow veteran Maarten Stekelenburg.
Everton’s stand in stopper Joel Robles has shown signs of weakness in recent weeks, poor in the Merseyside derby, and will have the Toffees looking for alternatives.
| Team | Saves GAME | Punches GAME | Passing Accuracy | Goals Conceded GAME | Appearances | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Víctor Valdés | Middlesbrough | 2.86 | 0.5 | 53% | 1.29 | 28 |
| Joel Robles | Everton | 2.53 | 0.41 | 50% | 0.94 | 17 |
Everton have shown with the purchase of Ashley Williams last summer that they are happy to bring in experienced payers if it makes the team better right now.
Star striker Romelu Lukaku has made clear he needs instant improvements in the team if he is to commit his future to the club, and Valdes can be a stop gap solution in goal for one or two years.
Valdes has conceded more goals per game than Robles, playing in a side struggling at the bottom of the table, but has made more saves per game as he battles to keep his side in the division.
