New sporting director Victor Orta signed Martin Caceres at Sevilla.

Uruguay international Martin Caceres’ stint in English football looks like it may have come to a very abrupt end. He joined Southampton in February, played just one game, and has now been released.
Various British clubs are now being linked with the player. With good reason as well. The former Barcelona and Juventus star has prestige and the honours to back up his talent. He has won the Champions League and La Liga and even won Serie A five times.

Injuries have set his career back slightly but staying in England could be great for his future. One team who might just have an edge in a pursuit for Caceres could be Leeds United.
It would be an ambitious move, but considering Caceres’ recent troubles, Leeds could be the perfect option. The club also need a new central defender. The departure of Garry Monk leaves a permanent deal for loan star Kyle Bartley unlikely.

But Caceres? At Leeds? He has played in two Champions League finals!
However, Leeds recent appointed Victor Orta as their new sporting director and that could give them the real edge in a swoop for Caceres. The Spaniard was technical director at Sevilla when they signed Caceres and could be an ace in the hole if Leeds were ambitious and went for Caceres.

His wages will be a stumbling block, as he was reportedly earning £100k-a-week during his brief period at Southampton. But with Orta’s history and a chance to play regular football again, perhaps Leeds could convince him to take a massive wage cut to play his football at Elland Road.
