Victor Orta responds when asked if Leeds will replace Pontus Jansson

Leeds United surprised many when they decided to sell Pontus Jansson to one of their Championship rivals.

Victor Orta has hinted to Leeds Live that there is a chance that Leeds could look to replace Pontus Jansson in the final weeks of the transfer window, but suggested that the Whites are almost done for their business this summer.

Leeds have had an eventful few weeks. Marcelo Bielsa’s squad has been bolstered with a number of loan signings, while several youngsters have joined on a permanent basis. The loan deal for Helder Costa was a real statement, but it is arguably the players who have left Elland Road who have grabbed a greater number of headlines.

Jack Clarke signed for Tottenham before returning immediately on loan, while the Whites surprised many by allowing Jansson to join Brentford.

While the large majority of the Elland Road faithful will trust Bielsa’s judgement over selling Jansson, there is some concern about not signing a replacement, especially after Leeds were beaten 4-0 by Manchester United in their latest pre-season friendly.

But, while Orta did hint that Leeds are still open to doing business, he hinted that the club may not be looking to make big changes in the final weeks of the window.

“We are always open in the market, but now we are [at] 90 per cent of the [squad we want],” he told Leeds Live. “It’s always a decision of the club. We are in a situation that all of the decisions are totally co-ordinated between all the people within the club: board, director of football, head coach.

“Ninety per cent is close, but obviously it’s football. In life the only thing I know is I am going to die,” he went on to add. “The rest – I am not sure of.”

Leeds did leave several key players at home, including Brighton loanee Ben White. But it would be little surprise if plenty of Whites fans were hoping that the defeat proves to be the catalyst that results in the club making one final push in the transfer market.

Of course, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were always expected to win the game in Perth. But the scoreline and some of the performances were concerning, and it may now be a risk to let the deadline pass without making any further signings.
