Leeds United have tied Pontus Jansson down to a new contract.
Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has told LUTV that he is very pleased to have tied Pontus Jansson down to a new contract.
The Whites swooped to take defender Jansson on loan from Torino in the summer of 2016, having seen the Swede struggle for first-team football since a 2014 move from Malmo.
Jansson starred last season, becoming a fan favourite off the back of his strong performances and superb relationship with supporters, whilst notching three goals in 36 games.
Leeds turned Jansson’s move permanent over the summer, landing a major coup given alleged Premier League interest – and now Leeds have moved to secure Jansson’s future for the long term.
Leeds handed Jansson a new five-year deal on Wednesday, tying his future to the Elland Road club until 2022 in a major boost for Thomas Christiansen’s men.
Jansson hasn’t been quite at his best in recent weeks, but Jansson is still one of the top centre backs in the Championship, and Leeds can now build their defence around him for the coming years.
After confirming the news of Jansson’s new deal, Leeds director of football Victor Orta spoke to LUTV about the agreement, admitting that he is ‘really pleased’ to have secured the deal with the defender.
Orta added that he thinks Jansson could impress at the World Cup next summer, with the new deal protecting Leeds should he attract interest in Russia, with Orta also claiming that Jansson can be important now and for the future.
“I am really pleased because we try and make a player for a contract in the long-term, and a player that can arrive at the World Cup next summer,” said Orta. “We are really happy with this situation in every sense, because he is a player that we know can be really important for this club now, obviously, and for the future,” he added.
