Tim Sherwood lost his first game in charge of Aston Villa after Victor Moses snatched a late winner for Stoke City.
There was an air of optimism around Villa Park before kick off today, with Tim Sherwood taking charge of his first game as Aston Villa boss since replacing Paul Lambert last week.
Yet come full-time, there were plenty of concerned faces as Villa dropped to 19th place in the Premier League table, just one spot above bottom club Leicester.
Former Tottenham boss Sherwood picked a bold 4-4-2 system for Villa, but they could only muster three shots on goal in 90 minutes – even if they did take the lead.
Manchester City loanee Scott Sinclair opened the scoring for Villa, heading home from Fabian Delph’s cross in the 20th minute.
That was as good as it got for Villa, as Stoke equalised on the stroke of half time, with Mame Biram Diouf bringing the Potters level from close range.
it seemed like Sherwood had at least taken one point from his Villa debut, but those hopes were dashed in injury time, with Ron Vlaar bringing Victor Moses down inside area – a foul the Dutchman saw a red card for.
Moses picked himself up to score from the spot and claim all three points for Mark Hughes’ side – leaving Sherwood with plenty of work to do.
