Victor Lindelof still struggling – and Pontus Jansson can capitalise on his nightmare

Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof is struggling – and Leeds United’s Pontus Jansson can take advantage.

Sweden may have lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Tuesday night, but they have still made it through to the play-offs for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Janne Andersson’s men fell to a 2-0 defeat as Arjen Robben scored twice in his final ever appearance for the Netherlands, and whilst Robben will claim all the headlines, Sweden will be worried about Victor Lindelof.

After an impressive season with Benfica last term, Lindelof looked to be emerging as one of the top young centre backs in Europe, and he seemed to be on a path to stardom after making a move to Manchester United, worth £31million (BBC Sport).

However, Lindelof not only showed shakiness in pre-season, but has yet to play in the Premier League as Jose Mourinho feels he isn’t quite ready, though he has played in both of United’s Champions League games this season.

The 23-year-old lurched to another disaster against the Netherlands, as he managed to kick the ball into his own hand to give away a penalty, and put the Netherlands 1-0 up after his comical error.

Andersson may now have a huge decision to make ahead of the World Cup play-offs, and possibly the finals next summer, as whilst captain Andreas Granqvist appears to be cemented at centre back, Lindelof’s place may now be under threat.

The player in the best position to replace Lindelof, should Sweden decide they need to bench him, is Leeds United’s Pontus Jansson; somewhat ironic given the rivalry between Manchester United and Leeds United.

Whereas Lindelof is attempting to adjust to new surroundings, Jansson is settled and playing regularly with Leeds, continuing to show that he is one of the Championship’s best centre backs.

With continued strong performances for Leeds, Jansson can rely pile the pressure on Lindelof and force Andersson to make a big decision about his defence, with the Leeds star no doubt hoping that he can take full advantage of Lindelof’s nightmare start to the season by taking his spot in the Sweden defence, and aiming for World Cup glory.
