Victor Anichebe has been in great form for Sunderland since breaking into their first-team.
Sunderland forward Victor Anichebe has told the Shields Gazette that David Moyes is teaching him how to defend in training.
Anichebe has been such a threat since moving to Sunderland that opposition teams are making special plans to limit his effectiveness.
The Nigerian international has been doubled up on in recent matches, which has increased his defensive workload.
And Anichebe admits that he is still trying to get used to having to track runners, as it is a role he has not had to perform before.
“Over the past few weeks, I have been asked to do more defensive duties, teams have been doubling up and letting their full-backs bomb forward to try and take me back instead of staying forward,” Anichebe said.
“It is something that I am adapting to.
“It is great for me because it is great to learn when to go, when to stay.
“The gaffer is trying to teach me more and more that I have to do a lot more for the team but also try and take the team forward as well.
“It is great learning experience and I am just really enjoying playing football.”
Anichebe has been in wonderful form since moving to Sunderland on a free transfer last summer.
The Nigerian international has added a new dimension to Sunderland’s attacking play, and David Moyes’ side have certainly benefitted.
Sunderland have won four of their last seven matches to climb off the bottom of the Premier League table, and to within a point of safety.
