Divock Origi put the Reds in the lead in the 75th minute, and James Milner added the second in the first minute of injury time.
Anichebe, who joined Sunderland in the summer transfer window after leaving Everton at the end of last season, featured in the match.
The 28-year-old Nigeria international striker started the game and played for the entire 90 minutes, and he has taken to Twitter to give his reaction to the final result.

Visitors Sunderland had just 23% of the possession, took six shots of which only one was on target, and earned four corners, according to BBC Sport.
