Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe has told the club’s official website that Jermain Defoe promised he would set him up for a goal in the win over Hull City.

The striker was once again on the scoresheet on Saturday afternoon as he bagged two in the 3-0 win over the Tigers.

They were his second and third goals in his last two games and helped the Black Cats to their second win of the campaign.

He had veteran Defoe to thanks for his goals who, after opening the scoring himself, turned provider for his new strike partner.

And Anichebe says the former England international had promised to set him up for another goal before doing just that later in the game.

“JD [Defoe] has set me up twice now and he plays the ball into me with space, so I just have to get contact on it,” he told the club’s official website.

“When the lights went off I said to him, ‘I need to score, I need to score’, and he said don’t worry and I didn’t need too because he found me.”

After praising Defoe, Anichebe was also keen to applaud another impressive performance from Jordan Pickford.

The young goalkeeper has established himself as Sunderland’s number one this season and was once again in fine form on Saturday afternoon.

He made a series of impressive stops to ensure Sunderland maintained their lead and did not miss out on another vital three points, and Anichebe was keen to see he got the praise he deserved.

“I have to say big credit to Jordan because he made some unbelievable saves at 1-0 and at 2-0, and if they score the game could go in a different way,” he added.
