Rodrigo Vilca is on the verge of joining Newcastle United but the Peruvian playmaker won’t play Premier League football immediately, Deportivo Municipal vice-president Alberto Borda has told Libero.

If this little-known 21-year-old can replicate the impact of the last Peruvian footballer to wear the iconic black-and-white stripes, Vilca could turn out to be one of the bargain signings in English football history.

The Daily Mail reports Newcastle will pay just £250,000 for Vilca, his market value diminished by the fact his contract expires in July 2021.

But, according to Borda, Magpies fans will have to be patient as they wait to see Nobby Solano’s fresh-faced compatriot in action.

“Rodrigo Vilca won’t go directly to the Newcastle first team. He will do a physical reconditioning first,” says Borda, who’s thrilled to see one of his players handed an opportunity at a Premier League giant.

“More than the money, the achievement is that a Municipal player is going to move abroad.”

Borda adds that Deportivo will include a sell-on clause in Vilca’s contract, understood to be around ten per cent. If the youngster thrives on Tyneside and is sold for a massive profit in a few years’ time, Municipal will be in the money.

Villa has produced six goals and assists in 12 games in the Peruvian top flight this season.

“He’s been in training with the national side and he’s very technically gifted,” Newcastle cult hero Solano told The Chronicle earlier this month.

“But he’s still in the process of development. It’s only in the last season that he played first-team football at Deportivo Municipal. We are just keeping an eye on how he’s doing.”
